Best Warm Ups Before Singing
A good warm-up wakes up the breath, the vocal folds and the resonance spaces without tiring the voice out before you've started.
1. Release the body
Roll the shoulders, release the jaw and let the neck lengthen. Tension anywhere above the ribs shows up in the sound.
2. Breath exercises
Slow inhale for four counts, hiss out for eight, building gradually to sixteen. This trains steady airflow rather than lung capacity.
3. Semi-occluded sounds
Lip trills and straw phonation are the gentlest way to move through your range. They balance pressure across the vocal folds and reduce strain.
4. Sirens and scales
Glide gently from low to high and back on an 'ng' or 'oo'. Only then move to open vowels and repertoire.
