Preparing for a Musical Theatre Audition

Panels are not only listening for a great voice. They're looking for a performer who makes clear, confident choices under pressure.

Choose repertoire that fits you

The right song shows your voice honestly and sits comfortably in your range on a bad day, not just a good one.

Prepare a clean 16 or 32 bar cut

Your cut should have a beginning, a turning point and an ending. Mark it clearly for the accompanist.

Tell the story

Know who you're singing to, what you want and what changes by the final line. Technique serves storytelling, not the other way round.

Rehearse the nerves

Mock auditions with an audience are the most effective way to make the real room feel familiar.
